Therapy can be for help when you are struggling with a current big stressor or to make major changes in problems that have troubled you for years. Current problems could include breaking up with a spouse, losing a job or coping with issues at work. You may have successfully navigated other stressors but somehow this time you feel like you’re in over your head. Sometimes you have just reached breaking point and you’re not willing to tolerate the crappy life your living and you’re ready for help to reach for your dreams. Therapy provides long-lasting benefits and support, giving you tools you need to avoid triggers, re-direct damaging patterns, and overcome whatever challenges you face.
Like most clients seeking therapy, you want to know if your therapist gets you and understand what you’re going through. You want to know if the therapist’s style, skills and experience will meet your needs. Having the chance to chat with me enables you to ask any question you might have about how I work and how I can help you get what you want. I also get the chance to ask questions of you to make certain that I feel that what I have to offer as a therapist is the right fit for you.
Before your first appointment, I will send you a link to your own client portal. All intake documents will be made available for you to complete before coming to your first appointment. It also gives me a snapshot of what is bringing you to counseling.
The client portal is a secure, personalized way for you to schedule your appointments, securely message me in between sessions, to access billing documents and intake forms. It gives you direct access to my schedule in case you need to re-schedule.
The first appointment lasts 55 minutes. For your first appointment, I’ll ask a bunch of questions to get to know you better and the problems you’ve been struggling with. I’ll also ask you some questions about your family history and medical history. We will talk about your strengths, your struggles, and your goals.
Together in your first session we will discuss your needs and how frequent your therapy sessions will need to be to achieve your goals. I generally recommend weekly at first so we can get to know each other better and start working on what’s troubling you. Research shows that what makes therapy effective is the relationship between a counselor and client. Over the course of our time together, we will re-assess your goals to see how you are progressing, and what areas you are struggling the most.
Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be different depending on your specific needs. Your active participation and dedication are crucial to your success. Counseling with me is very interactive. I do give out homework assignments for you to complete in between sessions to maximize your investment in yourself. It’s the work you do outside of our sessions that will really help you see your personal growth and development.
