Somatic Experiencing™ (SE), developed by Dr. Peter Levine, is a body-based method of working with trauma, anxiety and accumulated stress.
When I finally came to understand that everything I had struggled with emotionally and mentally in my life had a root cause in developmental trauma, I discovered Somatic Experiencing. SE has made a profound difference in my life.
No other therapy was able to help me address and heal my own complex developmental trauma.
SE is based in deep understanding our nervous system. SE says that our bodies retain the memory of any traumas we have experienced.
Trauma negatively affects our nervous system and can be stored in the body for a lifetime. Our nervous system regulates our ability to respond to stress, cope with conflict and engage with others. Trauma held in the body can lead to problems with emotional & physical dysegulation.
SE therapy is focused on gently stabilizing and regulating our nervous systems through being deeply attuned to our own innate arousal and relaxation cycles.
Many modern psychotherapies are a primarily a top down mind to body approach where just thoughts and feelings are examined. SE goes directly the source of what often troubles client’s with anxiety and trauma the most – the overwhelming sensations in their body.
SE focuses on the experiential body-based building of capacity for self-regulation and soothing. By touching into and then stepping back from agitation SE avoids retraumatizing you by engaging you in your ability to self sooth by not overwhelming or over stimulating the you in the healing process.
Over time your will be able complete the incomplete traumatic experience that lead to the dysregulation of the nervous system.
Through connection with the body, we begin to bridge the gap between body and mind, which leads to feeling more integrated and socially engaged with life and others.
SE is the only therapeutic treatment for anxiety and trauma that HEALS the nervous system and resolves both Acute and Developmental Trauma.
All other treatments are primarily management strategies that teach a client to cope better. SE is a therapeutic way of cultivating resilience and the capacity to move through your life able to respond in healthy and creative ways, enabling you to live a life worth celebrating.
